Liberal Arts & Sciences: Mathematics and Sciences, Major # 0645

This program has been deactivated and students will no longer be admitted to the major.  Currently enrolled students will complete the degree in accordance with the approved teach-out plan.

This associate in science degree program is intended for students interested in pursuing career opportunities in Biology or transfer to a baccalaureate degree program. The A.S. degree program provides students with a solid background in biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Students may transfer directly into four-year baccalaureate degree programs such as medical specialties, teaching, marine biology, biotechnology and environmental science. In additional to excellent transfer options, the Biology program enables students to seek employment in a variety of laboratory-based occupations in research facilities, environmental, or analytical labs.

Upon completion of the A.S. degree, transfer into a four-year baccalaureate degree program will allow a student to go into pure research, industrial appli- cations, research and development, or a management career in the technical industries. There are also opportunities for teach, and a student can satisfy requirements for entrance into a pre-law, pre-med, or pre-dental program.

 Student Learning Outcomes

Upon Successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

  • Identify the components of cells and their function.

  • Articulate the unified theory of  evolution and how it explains the similarities and diversity of living things.

  • Properly apply morphologic criteria to accurately identify and classify prokaryotic life.

  • Properly apply morphologic criteria to accurately identify and classify eukaryotic life.

  • Apply the principles of chemistry, specifically organic chemistry, to the biological sciences.
